Corzine Postcard Campaign As detailed in our “Background” section, we are currently lobbying New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine to order the distribution of opt-out forms to students statewide—a policy pioneered at Montclair High School. Such a policy would not require students to opt out; it would simply inform them of their rights and give them a real choice. The No Child Left Behind Act gives the military the right to contact students without their knowledge. The policy we promote would give students the right to decide. We have scheduled a meeting with Jane Ellen Duffy, policy advisor to Governor Corzine, for May 31. Since January, we have been distributing postcards for people to sign. We have sent the Governor nearly 200 so far, and would like to have another 200 in hand to deliver in person at the meeting. You can help us reach this goal by signing one here! Please print a postcard at the link above, sign it, and return it to New Jersey Peace Action, 673 Bloomfield Ave, 2nd floor, Bloomfield, NJ 07003. Remember, the meeting is May 31 — please sign and return your postcard before that date!!! Feel free to print multiple copies and distribute them to your friends and family. Just be sure to return them to us by May 31! |

Plainfield Project In collaboration with the Plainfield People’s Organization for Progress (POP), we are providing counter-recruitment literature for distribution to Plainfield High School students. We are doing this for several related reasons. First, of course, we want to urge students who might enlist in the military to reconsider. Second, we want to raise the school’s opt-out response rate, which currently stands at 13 percent. And third, we hope some of the students we talk to will be interested in getting involved with counter-recruitment work themselves. Stephen Hatcher, coordinator of Plainfield POP, has been distributing counter-recruitment literature to Plainfield students after school once a month. His efforts have produced noticeable results, as the opt-out response rate at Plainfield High School has risen by 4 percentage points, from 9 to 13 percent. However, he has been doing this alone, as no one from either POP or NJPA is available to help at the specified time. If you are available, or if you know someone who is available on Monday afternoons, please contact Stephen Hatcher at (908) 753-5273. Your help would truly make a difference! |
