Frelinghuysen Key to Nuclear Nonproliferation

FCNL Action Alert: Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen is Key to Nuclear Nonproliferation!

Dear Friends Concerned About Nuclear Disarmament:

We have an important opportunity to strengthen our country's nuclear nonproliferation effort and New Jersey Representative Rodney Frelinghuysen is key to those efforts. Please call the Capitol Switchboard 202-224-3121 or the toll free number at 877-762-8762 to let him know how you feel about nonproliferation dollars (see below).

Funding for nuclear nonproliferation programs has been frozen in a series of stop-gap spending measures in Congress for the last fourmonths. In February 2010, President Obama requested a $550 million increase (26%) for these programs. The increase would enable the U.S.to secure more vulnerable bomb-grade nuclear material overseas in the next four years.Congress has yet to act on this proposal. Congress is now drafting another "Continuing Resolution," or stop-gap funding measure, throughthe end of the federal budget year (September 30).

New Jersey Rep.Rodney Frelinghuysen
is the new chair of the House  Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee, which funds nuclear nonproliferation programs. He has the power to ensure that the proposed increase is adopted by the House of Representatives. If the House  approves the proposed nonproliferation funding increase, the Senate will  likely follow.

Rep. Frelinghuysen publicly supported the proposed increase of $550 million last year. Please contact him now and urge him to include the increase for nonproliferation programs in the Continuing Resolution.

Without a funding increase, the Energy Department will run out of money for nonproliferation efforts in the next few months. This is a risk that would be foolhardy to take. Enough nuclear material exists around the world to build more than 120,000 Hiroshima-sized nuclear bombs.

Would you help secure funding for nonproliferation efforts by sending an e-mail from
