Concert for Peace: “Gandhi’s Birthday Party”

The first annual Concert for Peace entitled “Gandhi’s Birthday Party” in commemoration of the October birth of Mahatma Gandhi will take place on October 19, 2013 from 7pm – 11pm at Westminster Theater, Bloomfield College.  The concert is a collaboration Bloomfield College, the student organization Green Hearts, and Bloomfield – based New Jersey Peace Action http://www.njpeaceaction.org/drupal/, the New Jersey affiliate of National Peace Action http://www.peace-action.org/. Peace Action is a national, grass-roots organization with the mission of mobilizing and educating people so they may influence governments and people to adopt peaceful resolution to conflicts by eradicating the use of nuclear weapons and war.

The concert will take place at Bloomfield College’s beautiful Westminster Theater.

The event will also mark Bloomfield College’s designation as a New Jersey Peace Action Peace Site, further solidifying the relationship between the two organizations. Peace Site designations preserve a location as a place for peaceful pursuits and the creation of a network for locations dedicated to a world working toward peace.

This event will include musical performances, and a student exhibition of submissions to a Gandhi/Peace contest for music and art.  There will be speakers and presentations from faculty, New Jersey Peace Action members, organizers, and affiliates. Bloomfield College student organizations and New Jersey Peace Action will be represented at tables. Refreshments will be available. Performers include: Taiko Zoku Japanese Drummers; Sam Held, bagpiper; Opera Theater Montclair; the NJ Industrial Union Council Solidarity Singers; The Yoko Ono Tribute Album Project with Deena Shoshkes, Rebecca Turner, Jack Brag, Christian Beach, and Ruby on the Vine; and Bloomfield College Talent Show along with acoustic sets from Bern and Bern & the Brights, Matthew Davis, Scot E. Moore, The marigold Trio, Tara and Bethann, Odarka Polanskij, and many more.

This is a multicultural, multigenerational program with all ages invited to attend.

Green Heart’s is a student organization committed to the principals of nutrition and health with an emphasis on growing organic food. They maintain a student organic garden on campus and have a program for helping area organizations like schools start their own organic gardening programs.
